It was 40 years ago on this very same day
I can still remember the words that we did say
Do you Peter take JoAnn for your lawfully wedded wife
To have and to hold and cherish for the rest of your life
Do you JoAnn take Peter to have and to hold
In sickness and health even when you grow old
40 years seems such a long time ago
You watched your children and seen them grow
Never in your life did you ever realize
That one of your children would never survive
His life became miserable his choices were few
He made up his mind on what he would do
There was nothing you did nor anything you said
Nor did you know you would find him dead
40 years ago you never even knew
What life held in store for you
Your life once full now shallow and low
Was surely happy those 40 years ago
Remember back through all those 40 years
May God bring a smile and wipe away your tears
Life isn't easy you must be strong
Pete is in heaven where he belongs
Then one day God will call your name
You and Pete will be together again
